Spa Titles : Manager or Director? The Substance Behind the Title

In the wellness industry – especially within the hotel spa sector – there's a recurring phenomenon worth discussing: the arbitrary use of titles like "Spa Director", even when the role is strictly operational.
Let's be clear:
The title of Spa Director is not just an "upgrade" from Spa
Manager. It's not about status – it's about a different level of
responsibility and leadership.
A true Spa Director is not involved in shift schedules or filling last-minute appointments. Instead, they are the person who:
✔ Defines the spa's
strategic direction
✔ Develops the business
plan and manages the budget
✔ Represents the brand at
executive and public levels
✔ Collaborates with senior
management, investors and media
✔ Envisions and shapes the
spa as a destination and holistic experience
If these responsibilities are not part of your daily reality, then – no matter how skilled or well-intentioned you are – you are not a Director. And there's nothing diminishing about that.
The role of a Spa
Manager is equally vital:
They ensure smooth daily operations, lead the team, enhance the guest
experience and keep the business running efficiently. Without a Manager, no
vision can be realized.
A title
doesn't make a professional.
What defines you are your responsibilities, your skill set and
the level of engagement with your organization.
Professional maturity is shown when you can honestly assess where you stand – and where you're heading – without clinging to titles that don't reflect your actual role.
Because at the end of the day, what matters isn't your email signature – it's what you deliver, every single day and at what level.
Our industry doesn't need
more titles.
It needs more substance.
